Marina is a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner who utilizes a holistic approach to care. She has 2.5 years of experience working in psychiatry and has received additional certifications as a complementary and integrative mental health professional and is passionate about helping individuals identify the root cause of their ailments when routine work-ups have been normal or when conventional medicine have not improved symptoms. Through her clinical experience and research she has developed a passion for integrative medicine and coaching as she desires to bridge the gap in the western medical system that does not allow much time for nutritional and lifestyle coaching during primary care appointments.
We provide a comprehensive evaluation of symptoms and history and can offer functional tests for female hormones, gastrointestinal imbalances, organic acids, and food sensitivity testing. Our treatment plans are individualized to the client and their goals, and often will include recommendations for dietary changes to optimize certain nutrients or avoid specific foods, supplement recommendations, and if warranted recommendation and referral for alternative therapies (Acupuncture, counseling, lymphatic massage, etc).

Functional medicine is also known as root cause medicine- and was founded and coined by Dr. Jeffrey Bland in 1990. Dr. Bland is known as the Father of functional medicine and he created the educational institute Integrative Functional Medicine (IFM) which trains practitioners how to identify and treat ailments using a natural approach.
Integrative medicine blends functional medicine and traditional western medicine together by using both conventional treatment methods such as prescription medication.
Imagine you have pain in your foot and you are coming to your provider to discuss this pain, in western medicine you may receive a prescription for ibuprofen and told to rest and ice it and return if it does not improve. In functional medicine we try to determine where the pain is coming from by asking in-depth questions, and we may even ask to see the shoes you were wearing when your foot started to hurt. In this case, let's imagine that the pain was coming from a tiny pebble in lodged in your shoe, we would remove the pebble and come up with a way to keep pebbles out of your shoe so your foot doesn't ache again.
I started Organic Living and Wellness (OLW) to help others regain control of their health. My passion for integrative medicine is partially driven by my experience in my own journey of issues despite normal routine testing with various specialists. Helping others empower themselves by discovering the root cause of their issues and improve their quality of life is such a rewarding experience. I am from Colorado and moved to South Carolina in 2014. I started my journey into healthcare as a licensed practical nurse and then became a registered nurse and worked in surgery and epidemiology while I went to graduate school. I graduated from Morningside University as a board certified family nurse practitioner and then I began my journey into psychiatry. I have worked in an outpatient psychiatry practice as a nurse practitioner for the last 2.5 years and have loved having the opportunity to work with patient's individually on their mental health journey. I became certified as a complementary integrative mental health professional and received additional training from the integrative psychiatry institute on using supplements to enhance psychoactive medications or to mitigate side effects.
My passion for integrative medicine started when I was completing my clinical rotations for nurse practitioner school. I had the opportunity to work alongside one of my brilliant friends Kristi who owns an integrative practice in Travelers Rest and I learned that there are many natural ways to treat acute and chronic conditions and improve longevity. From the moment I stepped foot in Kristi's practice I knew this was what my calling was. I recognize that the American lifestyle is not designed for longevity. We work long hours, spend countless hours on screens, we eat on the go, and we are just generally very busy. Primary care offices are swamped and often not given enough time to perform all of the assessments and tasks they need to and also provide lifestyle coaching, and they have to prioritize the immediate need, so usually they aren't left with much time to be able to do 1:1 lifestyle and nutrition coaching. My ultimate goal is to help bridge this gap and to help client's take back control of their health by combining my experience as a clinician with my expertise in health and wellness.
Taking a glimpse into my personal life- My husband and I have a 5-year old daughter and are fulfilling my childhood dream of living a quieter lifestyle on a farm. We are both entrepreneurs and also own a landscaping company, and as I mentioned previously I work full time in a psychiatric practice. In my spare time I enjoy reading suspense books, playing board games, and spending time with our animals but nothing beats a waking up on a Saturday morning and drinking a cup of coffee with my 2 best friends (one is pictured in the photo above).
Comprehensive stool testing can be to identify beneficial and pathogenic bacterial imbalances and identify fungal and parasitic infections, and determine efficiency of digestion. This is useful for people who may be experiencing any GI issues (indigestion, frequent nausea, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, or frequent susceptibility to illness). We are pleased to offer various types of tests depending on symptomology.
Food intolerance/sensitivity is different from food allergies. While you may not be "Allergic" to a food, you could be "sensitive" or "intolerant" and be experiencing a negative physiological response and increased inflammation. We offer various types of food sensitivity blood testing, ranging from a few of the most common triggers to exotic foods from different countries.
If you are experiencing menopausal/pre-menopausal symptoms, premenstrual symptoms, menestrual irregularities, or pre-menustrual dysphoric disorder we can help! We offer DUTCH (Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones) testing to identify hormone imbalances, methylation patterns and ability to detoxify. Presently, we work with one manufacturer for DUTCH testing.
Organic acid testing can identify how your body is using amino acids and identify areas for improvement. Imbalances in organic acids can help predict risk for chronic disease processes.
